Phil Ivey Grabs the Spotlight
casino blog
04 August 2014

Phil Ivey has grabbed the spotlight again recently, but not for his poker exploits.  This time he's back in the news for his ongoing baccarat saga with the Borgata Casino in New Jersey.

Back in April of this year, the Borgata Casino filed a $9.6M lawsuit against Ivey, claiming he had won that amount two years previously by cheating at their baccarat tables.  The Borgata alleged that Ivey had employed a technique called “edge sorting,” which takes advantage of flaws and variations in the printing on the backs of the cards in order to identify the value of those cards.

The Borgata maintains that Ivey used the information gleaned from the backs of the cards in order to win a total of $9.6M over the course of four playing sessions from April to October of 2012.  They also sued the card manufacturer, Gemaco Inc.

2014 November Nine has Six Nationalilities

02 August 2014

On July 15, the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event finally reached its November Nine, after 10 long days of play.  The multinational group of players will return to the Rio Hotel and Casino on November 10 to compete for a $10 million first prize.

This year's November Nine features a very diverse group of players, hailing from six different countries.  They include a Dutchman, a Norwegian, four Americans, a Spaniard, a Swede, and a Brazilian.  This is the first time a Brazilian has ever made it to the Main Event final table.

Another interesting first this year:  American Mark Newhouse has become the first player to repeat as a November Niner since the format was introduced in 2009.  He defied incredible odds of about 500,000 to 1 (assuming all players are equally skilled) in order to accomplish this feat!  Referring to his early exit in last year's November Nine, Newhouse jokingly said on the Poker Edge podcast, "I'm looking forward to not finishing ninth."

casino blog
22 June 2012

If you’re just starting out with online poker then you perhaps have heard about poker sharks. These are the people who like to take your money and they can do this quite easily. The question is, “how do you avoid the sharks?”

The simple answer is that you can’t, you just have to shape up and learn the game because this threat is unavoidable. This is why certain players were so aptly named – Sharks (pros) and Fish (amateurs).

You would think that sharks would play on the high stakes tables winning $100’s per pot, but contrary to popular belief, many of these professional sharks tend to frequent the lower stakes tables in order to take the money from the fish, like taking candy from kids.

Doyle Brunson, the legendary Poker Player
casino blog
07 October 2008

Very few men can put the fear of God into a person while sitting in a chair, wearing a cowboy hat with a smile on their face. A throwback to the Wild West, gun slinging legends, Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson commands respect at a poker table. At 72 years of age, Doyle has been playing poker for over 50 years, and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Born in Longworth, Texas in 1933, Doyle Brunson grew up a gifted athlete. He played baseball and ran track for his school, but it was basketball at which he excelled. He was a member of the All-State Texas basketball team, and was actually drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA.

But after suffering a severe accident at work, Doyle’s basketball career was cut short. After the sporting days were over, Doyle turned the focus on his education. He earned a Master’s degree in Administrative Education. It was in college where Doyle started gambling to support himself and pay tuition. After realizing he could make good money gambling, he made it a full-time job.
