The Story of Broadway Theater, New York
casino blog
24 April 2010

The Story of Broadway Theater, New YorkNew York City is absolutely filled with tourist attractions and historical landmarks that are more recognizable than in any other city in America. With the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building acting as the sights to see, the historic Broadway Theatre acts as the city’s hub of artsy productions and is the New York art district’s crown jewel.

A lot of people confuse Broadway the district with Broadway the building. With 40 individual theaters in the district, the multiple structures single-handedly make Manhattan stand out as one of the foremost production cities on the planet. Even with much of the world in recession, Broadway still manages to pull in close to a billion US dollars annually in ticket fees alone.

However, Broadway Theatre, the 1,700-seat centerpiece of the district, remains the top theater in the district despite the competition. It’s the one stage which every theatrical performer wishes to appear on, and no matter how many names it has gone by in the past, this building has always been the crème de la crème of New York’s play scene.

The History Of Times Square, New York

19 April 2010

The History Of Times Square, New YorkTimes Square is one of the most popular attractions in New York City and has kept people flocking to the large area for many years. Instead of the usual New York monument, Times Square is actually comprised of city blocks – it’s an intersection of the Manhattan borough, located at Broadway and Seventh and extended to Sixth and Eighth Avenue.

Although Times Square was always technically present in New York, it didn’t get its name until the early 1900s. John Morin Scott owned the area around the time of the American Revolution, and John Jacob Astor owned the property later on.

In 1904, after the New York Times moved to a skyscraper on the property, the paper’s publisher, Adolph S. Ochs, consulted the city’s mayor about constructing a subway station near the headquarters. This gave rise to a building boom and the area was named Times Square and promptly began the now-traditional electric advertising.

Architectural Icons of The World - Chrysler Building New York

14 April 2010

Architectural Icons of The World - Chrysler Building New YorkBuilt in 1930 and standing an imposing 77 floors with over a million square feet of viable space, New York City’s Chrysler Building is one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world and held the record for the tallest from 1930 to 31. Chrysler is located at Turtle Bay in Manhattan and this Art-Deco style landmark is one of the city’s most famous buildings.

Walter P. Chrysler decided he wanted a skyscraper built in New York in 1928. To help him see this dream to fruition, Walter enlisted one of the top Art Deco architects in the world, William Van Alen. No stranger to complicated designs featuring elaborate exteriors with simplistic interiors, Val Alen’s design made it possible for the building to be constructed at an unheard of rate of 4 floors per week.

During the period, there was somewhat of a race among property owners to see who could build the world’s tallest skyscraper. When the Chrysler Building was completed in 1930, it held that top spot until the Empire State Building was finally completed the following year.
